WHO IS A SOULJOURNER?
A Souljourner is not a tourist.
A Souljourner does not travel to escape life,
but to encounter it more fully:
Through another culture.
Another community.
Another way of understanding what it means to be human.
You are a Souljourner if you have ever sat in a beautiful place and still felt like you were only skimming the surface.
If you want to understand a culture, not just photograph it.
If you value the conversation over the landmark.
If you long for the kind of moment that changes something in you quietly and permanently.
We do not arrive as observers.
We arrive as guests, learners, and participants in something larger than ourselves.
We leave with more than information.
We leave changed. Connected. Deeply moved.

And still left feeling like you only saw the surface of a place.

You would rather have one real conversation than ten landmarks checked off a list.

You believe how you enter another culture says something about who you are.

Not just impressed. Not just informed. Actually changed.

THE SOULJOURNERS STANDARD
These are not premium upgrades. This is how every Souljourners journey begins.

Three live sessions before you depart cover cultural context, practical logistics, and the frameworks that shape how you travel. You arrive informed, not overwhelmed.

Every meal is chosen for quality and cultural authenticity. Dietary needs are collected before travel. Eating well is part of the experience, not an afterthought.

Every day is built around meaningful engagement, not sightseeing. You leave knowing something true about a place and the people who call it home.

You are met on arrival and supported through every transition. Airport pickup and drop-off are included on designated travel dates, so the journey begins and ends with care.

Logistics, accommodations, transportation, and in-country details are handled entirely. You focus on the experience. Everything else is taken care of.

Dr. Akumbu and Dr. Kim travel with you every step of the way. This is not a self-guided tour with occasional check-ins. You are accompanied, supported, and never navigating alone.
WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT
"True luxury is no longer only what you own. It is what you experience deeply,
remember clearly, and carry with you long after the journey ends."
Cultural depth and guided reflection built into every day. Most travel gives you access to places. Souljourners gives you access to something that cannot be packaged: cultural understanding, guided reflection, and trusted relationships built by scholars who have spent years showing up, not simply passing through. Private aircraft, luxury cars, fine watches, and beautiful hotels all have their place. But the most meaningful experiences move beyond possession into memory, perspective, and transformation.
Curated encounters with communities, educators, and local voices. For people who have already experienced traditional luxury, the question is no longer "What can I buy?" The deeper question is "What can I experience that will stay with me?"
You will arrive prepared, travel accompanied, and leave with something that does not fade when the photographs do. Preparation before travel and smooth coordination throughout ensure every journey is designed around that conviction.
A thoughtful group of travelers who choose depth over display. You will not leave this journey having simply seen Africa. You will leave having experienced its people, stories, beauty, and spirit.
Private Souljourners Experience
For travelers who can go anywhere but want to experience Africa with more meaning, privacy, beauty, and depth. This is the most spacious and personalized version of the journey. It begins with a private experience design conversation and is shaped around the traveler's pace, interests, privacy needs, and desired level of cultural access.
Private experiences are quoted individually, starting at $25,000.
Private Souljourners Experience Activities
Premium or luxury lodging where available, private rooms
A more spacious daily rhythm with protected time for rest or work
Selected cultural anchors and optional enrichment experiences
Private cultural conversations where available
Hosted reflection salons and intimate dining moments where available

YOUR GUIDES
Between them, Dr. Akumbu and Dr. Kim bring decades of international immersive program experience, published intercultural research, and the community relationships that only come from years of showing up
— not just visiting.

Lead Facilitator
Founder · Global Leadership Scholar · Author · Speaker · Intercultural Researcher
Dr. Ruth Vitsemmo Akumbu was born in Kedjom Ketinguh, Cameroon, and has spent her life learning what it truly means to cross cultures with integrity, curiosity, and care. She has traveled across more than 20 countries not as a visitor, but as a scholar who listens, a storyteller who bridges worlds, and a leader who has spent decades studying why some encounters change people permanently while others leave no mark at all.
That question is the foundation of everything Souljourners is built on.
Her doctoral research in global leadership and intercultural education, her TAUP Model and CIA/LSTEM Frameworks, and her Ubuntu-rooted philosophy are not academic abstractions. They are the architecture of every day you will spend on this journey. They are why travelers return home and describe the experience not as a trip they took, but as something that happened to them.
There are guides who know a place. Dr. Akumbu knows how to help you enter it and experience it fully. That is a rare and different thing entirely.

Co-Facilitator
Professor of Leadership · Dean of Asia Programs · Concordia University Irvine
Dr. Eugene P. Kim has spent his career at the intersection of leadership, culture, and transformation. As Professor of Leadership and Dean of Asia Programs at Concordia University Irvine, he has designed and led immersive programs across Asia that have changed how educators and leaders understand themselves and the world around them.
His doctoral work in intercultural communication and organizational change is not theoretical. It is the lived practice of someone who has spent decades creating the conditions for real cross-cultural understanding to take root. He does not study transformation from a distance. He has guided it, witnessed it, and refined the frameworks that make it repeatable.
That is exactly what he brings to every Souljourners journey.
There are scholars who understand culture from the outside. Dr. Kim enters it, studies it, and helps others experience it fully. That is what makes every Souljourners' journey richer for his presence.
Korean-American
Led multiple immersive leadership journeys across Asia
Teaches: Intercultural Communication, Organizational Change, Innovation & Entrepreneurship
Together, Dr. Akumbu and Dr. Kim bring complementary and proven expertise — her African heritage, extensive solo travel across 20+ countries, cross-cultural and intercultural collaboration research, and Ubuntu-grounded facilitation alongside his immersive program leadership, intercultural communication research, and decades of designing transformational learning experiences.
Rooted in Ubuntu — I am because we are — each journey is designed with care, and shaped by the conviction that when we encounter each other fully, something changes in us that cannot be undone.

Souljourners is a hosted cultural immersion experience, not a checklist tour. Every journey includes structured preparation before travel, guided cultural learning, reflection frameworks, carefully selected meals, trusted in-country coordination, and meaningful encounters with local communities. You are not dropped into a destination — you are prepared for it, accompanied through it, and supported after it. This is not mass tourism, volunteer travel, or luxury without purpose. It is a niche community of thoughtful travelers who choose depth over display.
Every journey includes three live preparatory meetings before departure plus one optional final readiness meeting. These sessions cover cultural context, practical preparation, group communication, and the learning frameworks that shape the journey — they are part of the experience, not just logistics briefings.
Dietary needs are collected before travel and honored throughout. Meals are selected at trusted restaurants chosen for quality and cultural authenticity, though availability may vary by location.
Airport pickup and drop-off are included on designated travel dates. Travelers are met on arrival and supported through the transition. Those arriving or departing outside designated dates are responsible for their own transfers.
Both include the full Souljourners experience — preparation, cultural immersion, guided learning, carefully selected meals, and trusted coordination. Classic is the public group journey with shared accommodations, quality lodging, group transportation, and zero to one internal flight. Signature offers more comfort and ease: private or upgraded room options, 4-star or boutique lodging where available, one to two internal flights, smoother routing, upgraded group transportation where possible, and hosted welcome and closing dinners.
The Private Souljourners Experience is designed for travelers, families, executive groups, and private communities who want a more personal and meaningful version of the journey. It begins with a private experience design conversation and is shaped entirely around the traveler's pace, interests, privacy needs, and desired level of cultural access. This experience may include premium lodging where available, a more spacious daily rhythm, private cultural conversations, hosted reflection salons, intimate dining moments, and access to local educators, artists, elders, and community leaders where possible. Private experiences are quoted individually from $25,000 per person — contact info@ruthakumbu.com to begin a conversation.
Yes — travelers may arrange their own international flights. Please contact us before booking to confirm the designated arrival and departure airports and dates. For Classic and Signature journeys, international flights are included in the quoted price. For Private Souljourners experiences, international airfare is not included unless specifically quoted.
Souljourners does not guarantee private transfers, private guides, luxury lodging at every destination, specific Wi-Fi access, or fully custom logistics unless these are included in a written quote. We use language such as "where available," "when possible," and "may be arranged" intentionally and honestly. What we do guarantee is care, preparation, cultural depth, and a hosted experience rooted in respect.
Use the Stay Connected section on this page to join the interest list and share where you would love to go. Your response directly informs how we plan future journeys.
